It is not really the deal itself, but the way Rajapaksa has gone about promoting it that is questionable.

In spite of having the largest cabinet in the world, it's surprising (or is it) that Rajapaksa takes charge of this kind of deals himself, completely sidelining the minister in charge.

I think we've got some Rajapaksa jockeys trying to deflect the real issues here -- which is after all, a trademark of the clan.

-LWBLankaWhistleBlowerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07922172358012895728noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6514241280485089573.post-84385370027517201022007-05-28T12:30:00.000+00:002007-05-28T12:30:00.000+00:00Mahinda never said he'll nationalise corporations ...Mahinda never said he'll nationalise corporations that already have been privatised. SLT is doing damn good as a part-private company.

What's wrong with the UNP? It's been taken over by economically-illiterate anti-Capitalist lunatics. This is not in line with the UNP policies that most people support.

There's absolutely no proof that NTT was arm-twisted to sell their shares. They've simply chosen to liquidate their investment at the right time and they've chosen a buyer they like. This is not about privatisation because the shares in question have ALREADY been privatised. NTT has a right to sell their assets to whoever they want. If we prevent them now, do you think any investors will come to Sri Lanka in the future. We've had a free open economy since 1977 and most people would like to keep it that way.

I'm so sorry for Ranil. What's happened to him? He used to be a great man with a clear consistent economic vision.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6514241280485089573.post-10443323629423607822007-05-27T22:04:00.000+00:002007-05-27T22:04:00.000+00:00Any dumbass would know that the sale of the primar...Any dumbass would know that the sale of the primary telecommunications network is subject to government approval. This is the case all over the world, including the USA where free enterprise is the only thing.
Question is how all these things were overlooked. Forget the UNP, isn't Mahinda Rajapaksa against privatization? So, if NTT was selling its shares this would be the perfect opportunity for the govt to take SLT back to govt.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6514241280485089573.post-86639460702874736892007-05-27T10:35:00.000+00:002007-05-27T10:35:00.000+00:00Another laudable 'investigative' report by Sonali....Another laudable 'investigative' report by Sonali.

But one question comes to my mind. While all the reported arm-twisting of NTT was going on, why was there no strong protests (official or unofficial) lodged by the Govt. of Japan - one of our leading aid providers ?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6514241280485089573.post-82098110801213564652007-05-27T07:07:00.000+00:002007-05-27T07:07:00.000+00:00Mahinda forcing NTT to sell out? Sounds like a Sir...Mahinda forcing NTT to sell out? Sounds like a Sirikotha fairy tale to me.

As far as I'm concerned, NTT can sell its shares to anyone. Why would they have invested so much time and money on SLT if they can't make a profit out of it? They don't need approval from anyone to sell what they own to whoever they like.

What's happened to UNP. I thought this was a modern party that stood for privatisation, free economy, and liberalisation.
